We are fermented-foods obsessed! (Did you hear our kombucha feature on CBC Radio DayBreak South? Wee!)
Hi, I'm Raina! I'm a Holistic Nutritionist, and known as the Okanagans' "Kombucha Girl" as my parent company (a distribution of myself) Lutz Nutrition teaches fermented foods workshops throughout the Okanagan: public workshops or private in your home. We've been brewing kombucha and educating folks' about fermented foods, digestion and Holistic Nutrition since 2012! I'm unorthodox, sarcastic and my fermentation classes, on occasion, have been compared with standup comedy - flavour: dry.
(Pssst, get on my mailing list to find out which workshops are upcoming & for fermentation education!)
Down to the real important things now: the benefits of fermented foods, in addition to a healthy, rounded whole foods diet, they add many therapeutic bonuses:
- aids digestion
- aids liver
- balances out gut bacteria
- improves energy
- improves immune system
- tastes delicious!
Hi Raina; I am so pumped about fermentation since I took your class! I am going to try and make something with some surplus apples I was given. This is so exciting, I am like a kid in a candy shop and love it. Thanks so much for putting your class on and getting us all motivated towards food fermentation. I am going to try and make a few of your other recipes soon as they sound very good. Appreciating you.

I met Raina over 2 years ago. I had been having a terrible time with digestion issues and stress. Raina suggested I try kefir, kombucha and fermented foods. The difference was magical, almost overnight. I started making all of the suggested fermented products at home - it’s so easy! I took a couple more workshops - just to reach my comfort level. I joined her facebook page “Fermenting the Okanagan” and what a joy to have such resources right here in the valley. I have been symptom free for 2 years now. Thank you Raina. -Hilma L. Penticton BC
They are incredible and healing for our digestive system, and learning to make our own gives us our power back in the kitchen... and within our nutrition. It is something powerful that we can do ourselves and be in charge of. Many people have described to me the process of eating fermented foods as their body "saying YES YES - FINALLY!" as if they felt like these were something they'd been missing this all time.
We've been hearing about 'good bacteria' in the gut as part of food marketing for a number of years, and more to come. (Watch for food marketing however, especially for yogurt commercials.)
(Humble Brag, even though this happened before I was born:) Holistic Nutritionists' and "alternative health circles" have known about the importance of gut bacteria and balancing it for decades. Just now, there are finally scientific studies to back us up, connecting gut bacteria to mental health, obesity, inflammatory conditions and more. Fermented foods and their probiotics are powerful.
I LOVE teaching about crafting or brewing your own fermented foods...
