Okanagan apples are almost perfection. The heat of the summer has just passed over your sun-kissed shoulders and fall is in the air. It is still warm, but nature knows the shift is near and the orchards' trees are drooping with apples, glorious apples.
Apple crisps are incredibly comforting and a seasonal treat for our beautiful Okanagan Autumns, apple crisp is one of the easiest desserts you can make and I'm using real foods so it is healthy. I like to make a few little crisps when I get a bunch of apples, because they freeze well and are a treat that can be pulled out later on if you have unexpected company.
It’s SO easy to make! I am not even close to a pro-baker, but I’ve made this apple crisp many times and it is always a crowd pleaser. (Or, a spouse pleaser! OR a self-pleaser!) This could also work for a comforting breakfast too due to the low amount of sugar in it (in which you could replace the coconut sugar with raw honey or maple syrup instead) which is nice if you don’t have time for making a big breakfast for your guests. (Ahhh, and it works great just for yourself too!)
In case you are sensitive to dairy or a vegan, I’ve given you a substitution below.
Perfectly Simple Apple Crisp
- 2 cups organic oats (soak for a couple hours if you want to enhance digestibility of the oats)
- 1/2 cup whole wheat flour
- 1/2 cup melted organic butter (vegan? use coconut oil)
- 1/4 cup raw coconut sugar (purchase from a health food store)
- 1 tsp of cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp nutmeg(optional)
- 6-8 apples, any kind — ambrosia and golden delicious are my favourite, sliced into chunks. Get unsprayed apples as often as possible.
- Sprinkle with coconut sugar (use more or less depending on the sweetness of the apple - this requires a taste test!)
- 2 tsp cinnamon
- Splash of apple juice or apple cider (optional)
Topping: Combine all the ingredients into a large bowl.
Apple Base: Chop all the apples and mix together with the sugar, spices and optional juice.
Place all the apples into a baking dish. I used a few loaf pans, but you can use any size. Then spoon out all the topping on top of the apple base. Option to drizzle with some real maple syrup.
Transfer to oven to bake at 350 for 30 minutes!
Makes 8 servings. Option to serve with some coconut ice cream, or dairy free iced dessert. (Some would say, not an option... but a requirement.....)

Fruits are a great snack for anytime of day.
They taste delicious, and make us feel satisfied.
Apples contain antioxidants - that helps protect our cells from damage. Apples in their whole form (eaten on their own, not as sauce or juice) have blood sugar balancing properties. Another great thing about apples is that they can be stored for quite a long time (3-4 months or more, depending on the variety) so when you find your favourite, you can stock up knowing you've got time to get through eating them!
In Norse mythology, apples were given a positive persona: a magic apple was said to keep people young forever.
Maybe we've found a fountain of youth, at last.... ?
